Eaglewood Folk Festival - Pefferlaw Onatrio - A Stay-cation Destination

Now in it's 22nd year, the Eaglewood Folk Festival continues to celebrate outstanding Canadian folk music performers in the beautiful and intimate pine tree acreage located in Pefferlaw, ON. 

IN 1989 Cheryl Gaudet stood on the deck of Eaglewood Resort and imagined the grounds filled with hundreds of people gathering from all walks of life to hear wonderful music enjoying delicious foods and artisans selling their wares.

Fast forword to today and we see what started as the "Eaglewood Earth Festival" as it is today The Eaglewood Folk Festival, A celebration featuring workshops and concerts, promoting of folk/roots music, endorsing crativity and diversity of Native culture, health and wellness and environmental concerns.

Durham Region Transit and GO Transit Provide Additional School Bus Service

In addition to the school bus services provided by Durham Student Transportation Services Durham Region Transit  provides additional services to eligible Durham District School Board secondary school students These reduced cost monthly passes are sold at DDSB high schools only.

The Durham District Catholic School Board supplies eligible high school  students with DRT Restricted Student monthly passes at no cost. These passes are supplied by DDCSB high schools.

These Restricted Student passes provide unlimited Durham Region Transit and GO Bus travel between 6:00am and 7:00pm, Monday to Friday, including Statutory Holidays, School Breaks and Professional Activity Days during the regular school year. (they are not available in July and August).

One Fare Anywhere in Durham Region for Students

• One fare anywhere in Durham Region, including GO Transit with a pre-paid DRT ticket, pass or transfer.
• Passengers may board GO Bus with a pre-paid DRT ticket, pass or transfer without additional cost.

Some Basic Differences Between Durham Region Transit, GO Transit And Regular Yellow School Buses.

While Regular Yellow school busing may be canceled on bad weather Days DRT High School Bus Service are not

• Seating for all passengers is not guaranteed on DRT or GO Transit Buses as they are public transit services.
• Students must carefully watch for passing traffic when approaching boarding or departing from transit buses. School bus stopping laws do not apply to DRT or GO Transit buses,

Durham School Board Bus Schedules

You can now obtain student transportation information 24/7 for September 2011, this includes bus number, pickup / drop off locations as well as the times by calling the automated phone system at 1-866- 908-6578 or 905-666-6979

In order to access student transportation information you must have the students OEN number or his/her student number and date of birth. Both numbers (OEN or student number) can be provided to you by your school or it is on their last report card.

Durham Student Transportation Services is responsible for the management and administration of all home to school transportation for all eligible students of both the durham District and the Durham Catholic School Boards

Volunteers Help To Keep History Alive

The only papers I check out on an ongoing basis are the local papers as they report on local happenings.  In reading last week's Cosmos a commentary from Carol Johnson caught my eye.

Carol is a member of the Uxbridge Historical Society the fund raising and volunteer arm of the Uxbridge Historical Centre. 

Her concern is the number of board members who are resigning and the problem of finding someone to fill their shoes.

As those that work tirelessly at preserving our Hstory and Heritage age; they sometimes feel the need to give up their commitments for health or personal reasons. In order to continue their work new faces, hands and minds are always needed.

Is This The Year Of The Last Heritage Days Event? Like Pictures In An Old Photo Album Without Volunteers to Help Keep History Alive Will The Past Simply Fade Into The past?   "A Number of Historical societies in Ontario have disbanded from lack of support. Don't let that happen Here. The Society is group of volunteers interested in preserving, and who work to preserve our history and our heritage for future generations. They apply for grants, run events like The Heritage Days, hold meetings for guest speakers, and assist with many odd jobs around the centre.

In the past Uxbridge has been blessed with a large number of people who give freely of their time to preserve and enhance our History and our Heritage. from The York Durham Heritage Railway to the Foster Memorial Our local Museum with it's exhibits and Heritage Days and of course our National Historic Site The Leaskdale Manse where Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote 11 of her 22 best selling novels.

Art In The Park returns to Elgin Park

 As you stroll through the park, take time to watch some of the artist at work, talk to the artists or sit and watch the children in the play/art area as you partake of the scrumptious food from the various food vendors.

Art In The Park has been an annual event here in Uxbridge since 1995

Elgin Park is located in the south central part of Uxbridge in Durham Region which is about 45 min. north and east of Toronto and can be reached easily from the 401 or 404.

There is plenty of free parking and admission is free but donations are welcome. For additional information contact Bob Armitage (905) 852-4648  

Elgin Park - Uxbridge - A Stay-cation Destination

Uxbridge is blessed with many natural areas that have been preserved and enhanced for public use with trails and facilities. One such area is the 140 acre Countryside Preserve that sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, another is Elgin Park.

Elgin Park is home to Numerous events starting early in the season with The Huck Finn Fishing Day for kids at Elgin Pond. Elgin park is also home to the Highlands Of Durham Games, RibFest, The Uxbridge Fair, and numerous other events including the upcoming ART in The Park. Hardly a weekend goes by that Elgin park is not home for one event or another throughout the Summer months.

SCHOOL BUS RULES , REGULATIONS AND SAFETY TIPS

IT IS THE LAW

All vehicles traveling in both directions must stop when approaching a school bus with its upper red lights flashing. (the only exception is on a divided highway separated by a median if you are approaching the school bus from the opposite direction)

Penalties

• Penalties For Not Stopping First offense $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points
• Each subsequent Offence $1,000 to $4,000, six demerit points and possible jail time up to six months.

Safety Tips

Parents and educators are urged to review school bus safety with their children and charges that can be found on the MTO site at School Bus Safety Smarts. and School Bus Safety Resources
